Planned Giving Boot Camp Session 1

The Saint Louis Planned Giving Council and the Association of Fundraising Professionals are again partnering to host a three-part Planned Giving 101 Boot Camp Series.
The series is designed to introduce the concepts of planned giving to development professionals, executive directors, board members and others who are either new to planned giving or interested in starting a planned giving program. It will appeal to experienced gift planners as well. Presented over three sessions, experts will share their practical knowledge and proven templates for success. Walk away with specific actions to implement immediately and plans to keep building your program! Session format includes Q&A.

About the session:

The first session, presented by the Mary and Michael McMurtrey, will address the power of collaboration in a successful planned giving program.  Using a specific tool called, “Will to Give; Where There’s a Will There’s a Way” – you will learn about the benefits of Will to Give, how to talk with your boards and key stakeholders about its value in a planned giving program.  Additionally, they will present a mini Will to Give so that you can see the program first hand and they will work with you to develop strategies for incorporating this type of presentation into your fundraising efforts.

About the Speakers:

Mary McMurtrey
Financial Advisor
Mary has a passion for philanthropy. She is a recognized community leader with twenty years of nonprofit and philanthropic experience. Her responsibilities include; philanthropic advising for current clients as well as advising nonprofit and foundation clients with their retirement accounts, reserve funds and endowments. Mary helps her clients with fund development and planned giving strategies as well as offers guidance on overall policies and procedures.
Mary graduated with degrees in English Literature & Gender Studies from Augsburg University. She then completed a Master’s Degree in Public Policy Administration and Nonprofit Management & Leadership from the University of MO- St. Louis. Mary previously led the Gateway Center for Giving and later went on to serve as the Director of Community Engagement at the St. Louis Community Foundation where she created and launched GiveSTL Day and Invest STL, in addition to managing several philanthropic portfolios that helped countless donors give with confidence.
Mary is a member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals and the St. Louis Planned Giving Council. She currently serves on the boards of the Diversity Awareness Partnership, the Arianna Arts, the St. Louis County Port Authority, and VNA. She is a founding member and serves on the Advisory Board of the Women’s Foundation of Greater St. Louis.
Michael McMurtrey
Senior Vice President – Investment Officer
Michael has over 30 years’ experience in the brokerage and securities industry, he has a successful career working with both businesses and individuals.  In 2017, Michael became a Premier Advisor with Wells Fargo Advisors, a designation held by a select group of Financial Advisors as measured by business production, educational attainment, and overall professionalism.
The focus of Michael’s practice is helping small-business owners, individuals, nonprofits and family foundations.  Michael joined Wells Fargo Advisors with a clear vision of providing excellent client service driven by strategies not products.
Michael earned his Master of Finance from St. Louis University.  Prior to joining Wells Fargo Advisors, Michael ran an investment management company.  Additionally, he spent 15 years at a financial services firm offering advice to institutional investors, including mutual funds, pension funds and investment advisors.  While there, Institutional Investor magazine ranked the department he ran in the top ten in its discipline, worldwide.
Michael currently serves on the Planned Giving Council for the St. Louis Zoo, the board of the Asthma & Allergy Foundation and the Ladue School District’s Finance Committee. Previously, he served on the boards of the St. Louis Planned Giving Council and the Association for Fundraising Professionals.
