Culture-Crossing Service: Recruiting and Retaining Culturally Competent Volunteers

June 24, 2016 @ 9:00 am - 1:00 pm

$55.00

Volunteer experiences foster opportunities for people of various backgrounds to interact with one another. But navigating the many currents of class, race, faith, education and language can cause friction between volunteers, those they serve, and you – the volunteer manager who’s steering the ship! In this session we’ll discuss how to train our current volunteers to serve with cultural sensitivity, how to broaden our recruiting efforts to include underrepresented groups, and address common barriers that volunteers encounter in culture-crossing service.

Instructor Hannah Shanks holds her Master’s in Social Work from St. Louis University. She works with churches, non-profit organizations and universities on issues related to cultural competency, social justice, and organizational direction and building strategic partnerships.

Fee: $55. ($40 for MVMA members, with promo code. MVMA members who need the promo code may contact Pam Gordon at President@mvma-stl.org

This course qualifies for four hours of credit toward the Chancellor’s Certificate in Volunteer Management. In order to obtain this noncredit certificate, individuals must enroll in, and complete, 16 or more hours of training in classes and/or events that are produced as part of the collaboration between MVMA and the NPML program.
