Indeed\, it is the only thing that ever has.”   Margaret Mead \nGroups\, committees and collaborative efforts are essential parts of the work in a nonprofit organization.  What is the essence of “group process” and what is the role of the professional in creating successful group dynamics?  How does a staff person know when to lead and when to step back to ensure others feel empowered? This class highlights the stages and elements of  collective impact\, including the professional skills required to simultaneously meet the needs and expectations of participants\, while staying focused on the organization’s mission.  Come to this class to learn how to create and foster successful group dynamics within your nonprofit organization. \nInstructor Marci Mayer Eisen has worked in the St. Louis nonprofit community for 30+ years with an emphasis on community building.  She is the Director of the Millstone Institute\, a leadership development initiative of the Jewish Federation of St. Louis. Should the relationship with the volunteer be repaired? Can we FIRE the volunteer? Should we?\nThis workshop provides insights into how to identify the underlying issues and address them in a manner that protects the dignity of the volunteer and all parties concerned.  Step-by-step\, participants will explore opportunities to once again find a workable balance within their volunteer programs.\nAt the conclusion of this workshop\, participants will be able to:\n·         Identify underlying reasons for poor volunteer performance;\n·         Implement a progressive discipline system;\n·         Understand when and how to remove a volunteer.\nAbout the Presenter:\n\nReneé Johnson\nNonprofit Generalist\nReneé Johnson is a nonprofit generalist with particular expertise and professional experience in volunteer and arts management\, grants management and training. She consults with nonprofit organizations on a myriad of issues and teaches a course on basic volunteer management in the Nonprofit Management Program at Washington University.\nReneé served as the initial Executive Director of the Edwardsville Arts Center\, helping the organization establish its first facility. Previously\, she co-managed the Minority Arts Program (MAP) of the Missouri Arts Council (MAC).  With her counterpart in Kansas City\, Reneé helped minority developed arts programs throughout the state access the financial and technical assistance resources of the Council while providing guidance and coaching in the general growth and development of the nonprofit organizations. Prior to her work with MAC/MAP\, Reneé redeveloped and managed the volunteer and intern programs of the Missouri Historical Society; and\, served as the Director of External Communications for the Greater Minneapolis (MN) Girl Scout Council. Throughout her career\, Reneé has fed her passion for exchanging ideas and sharing knowledge as a local\, regional and national trainer. While completing her graduate work in Arts Management at American University\, Reneé worked with both local and national arts service organizations based in Washington\, D.C.  She also holds a BA in Russian and Chinese Comparative History from Oberlin College.\nAs a volunteer\, Reneé serves the volunteer management field as a member of the Editorial Review Board of the International Journal of Volunteer Management (IJOVA) and as a member and past president of the St. Louis Council (CVD) – Directors of Volunteer Services\, now the Metropolitan Volunteer Management Association.Her current community involvements include Oberlin College Alumni Recruiter and co-chair of the Child Welfare Allocations Panel of the Greater St. Louis United Way.

Haley\, CFRE\nPrincipal | Let’s Build Hope\, LLC\nSince 1995\, Linda has successfully developed funds\, helping to raise more than $100 million for various non-profits\, including religious\, social services\, educational\, and healthcare organizations.\nShe coordinated the annual fund efforts of nine major ministries of the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod and then provided leadership on a $440 million campaign.  Linda led Advancement Services’ efforts for McKendree University before moving to Zielinski Companies to work as a fund development consultant.  There\, Linda directed a team of three senior consultants and created popular development products\, increasing sales revenue by 658% during her five-year tenure.\nLinda moved into the social services realm in 2006\, serving as Chief Development Officer for TouchPoint Autism Services and growing fund development revenue by 271% in five years.  Linda became CDO for Youth Learning Center\, where she led her own one-person shop and built the development program from the ground up!  Realizing a long-time dream\, Linda started Let’s Build Hope\, LLC\, in 2013. DESCRIPTION:Starting and Governing a Nonprofit 501(c)(3) Organization in Missouri\n\nThursday\, Oct. 22\, 2015 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Social Sciences and Business building\, Room # SSB 411 (on the UMSL north campus).\n\nStarting a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and governing a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization are flip sides of the same coin.  Steps you take in forming a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation affect how your organization must operate in the future.  Steps you take in the governance and operation of your 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation affect your ability to maintain your 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status with the IRS on an ongoing basis.\nCome to this class to learn how to start a Missouri nonprofit corporation that will seek to obtain 501(c)(3) tax exempt status from the IRS. In addition\, this class will also cover good governance policies\, strategies\, and requirements that will allow your organization to maintain its 501(c)(3) tax exempt status on an ongoing basis once you are up and running.\nThis is an intensive 8 hour class that will focus on practical information and resources like forms to use\, web sites to access\, governmental offices to contact or be aware of\, and a checklist of steps to take.\nInstructor Dan Sise\, JD\, joined the Nonprofit Management and Leadership Program (NPML Program) at U.M. – St. Louis in October\, 2008\, and serves as the NPML Program’s Academic Coordinator and Community Engagement Manager. DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, Aug. 13\, 2015 from 3-5 p.m. in the Social Sciences and Business Building SSB # 218\, on the north campus of UM-St. Louis *Note different location than previous workshops*\nGiven the vital role of volunteer nonprofit corporate board members in our region\, and in the entire nonprofit sector\, it is of utmost importance that more people fully understand the responsibilities that go with joining the board of a nonprofit corporation. This class will help individuals and organizations better understand the duties\, obligations\, and liabilities that apply to the members of the board of directors of a nonprofit corporation\, regardless of its size or programs. In addition to covering both Missouri law and general legal principles that relate to nonprofit board membership\, this class will also discuss board member protections in the form of insurance\, indemnification\, and statutory protection from some forms of liability.\nInstructor DAN SISE\, JD\, joined the Nonprofit Management and Leadership Program (NPML Program) at UM – St. Louis in October\, 2008\, and serves as the program’s Academic Coordinator and Community Engagement Manager. Dan is also an instructor for the NPML Program\, and teaches a class on “Legal Issues for Nonprofit Organizations” that is a required course for the NPML Certificate.\nA 1997 graduate of the University of Illinois College of Law\, Dan is currently licensed to practice law in Missouri and Illinois. In the course of his legal career\, Dan has dealt with a wide range of issues\, including regulatory compliance\, insurance coverage and defense\, community redevelopment\, and nonprofit governance and oversight. He serves on the board of directors of a number of nonprofit organizations\, including the St. Louis-Jefferson Solid Waste Management District and the Daughters of Charity Foundation of St. Louis. Prior to joining the faculty of the NPML program\, Dan worked at Habitat for Humanity St. Louis where he was director of operations.\nTuition: $20
