SUMMARY:Overtime Pay: New Regulations and What Nonprofit Organizations Need to Know
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, July 14\, 2016\, from 3-5 p.m. in Room # 92 of the JC Penney Conference Center on the UMSL north campus\nNonprofit organizations are not exempt from the laws that cover fair wages and compensation for employees.   As such\, nonprofit organizations need to know about the new overtime regulations that were recently announced by the U.S. Labor Department\, which go into effect on December 1\, 2016.  The new regulations mean that more employees will be entitled to overtime compensation\, regardless of whether they are currently classified as executive\, administrative\, or professional (white-collar) workers.\nCome to this class to learn about (1) these new overtime regulations\, (2) the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA)\, (3) how to identify “exempt” vs. “nonexempt” employees\, and (4) how all of this is handled by the U.S. Department of Labor.\nInstructor John “J.P.” Hasman is a partner at Armstrong Teasdale\, which is one of the nation’s largest 200 law firms.  He is also a former National Labor Relations Board attorney.   In his practice\, J.P. negotiates union contracts\, handles unfair labor practice charges\, resolves grievances\, represents clients at grievance arbitrations\, and manages secondary picketing issues and other strike-related litigation and matters. In addition\, J.P. assists nonunion employers with union avoidance efforts\, and advises and counsels employers during union campaigns.\nAs co-chair of the firm’s Higher Education industry group\, J.P. helps lead the firm’s multi-disciplinary representations of some of the country’s largest and most esteemed colleges and universities. SUMMARY:How to Develop and Sustain an Effective\, Engaged Nonprofit Board
DESCRIPTION:Do you want to strengthen your board’s effectiveness and the relationship between your board and staff executive? Do you want your board and members to be vitally engaged and forge the best possible working partnership with staff to more fully achieve the organization’s mission? This workshop is for current and aspiring nonprofit staff executives and board leaders\, including incoming board members\, who want to learn and apply promising practices based on the latest research for making their boards even more effective and their staff-board relationships more productive and satisfying. It will also provide an opportunity for workshop participants to share with their peers the greatest challenges and successful strategies for strengthening board effectiveness. The learning activities will mix plenary presentation and discussion\, panel presentation and question and answer with a diverse set of nonprofit leaders\, and small\, break out group discussions.\nThe workshop will address topics such as:\n(1) the nonprofit board’s primary roles and responsibilities;\n(2) promising practices and tips from the latest academic research on board development and effectiveness\, from board composition\, recruitment and on-boarding through engagement and leadership development to evaluation and renewal;\n(3) a new model containing successful methods to determine the best working relationship for board and staff at the full board\, committee\, and individual member levels.\nInstructor John McClusky is a consultant and educator of nonprofit leadership and has worked locally\, nationally\, and internationally with hundreds of NPOs and thousands of nonprofit leaders. He has trained and consulted with a vast range of nonprofit organizations on governance and boards. He was the founding director of UMSL’s NPML program. He is the recipient of numerous academic and professional awards\, and an author of numerous publications on nonprofit organizational leadership\, governance\, effectiveness and capacity building.\nThe three panelists\, Faith Sandler\, Jessica Eiland\, and Andrew Thorp represent a great diversity of nonprofit leadership in our region across different mission domains and sizes of organization\, and all have extensive service as both executives and board leaders. They will present a rich variety of lessons learned and successful strategies and tips for building effective\, engaged boards\, as well as respond to workshop participants’ questions.

She also holds responsibilities in Fund Development and is a firm believer in fundraising being part of everyone’s role within an agency. In the first year of being an official part of the development team\, she helped increase fundraising for the Central and Southern Illinois region of One Hope United by over 60%. She brings to One Hope United experience building successful teams and a background in not only communications and fundraising\, but mental health and counseling. Melissa is a licensed therapist (LCPC) and has worked in the field for over 17 years. Melissa is a graduate of Indiana State University\, with a BS in Communications and an MS in Agency Counseling.\nJayme Godoyo is a Fund Development Officer for One Hope United\, covering the Central and Southern Illinois region. In her five years with the agency\, Jayme has been involved in numerous changes\, the most recent being the realignment of the team into one entity\, thus dissolving the regional lines. Since that transition began in early 2015\, development income has more than doubled agency-wide. Jayme brings experience in direct service work with residential youth to the team as well as a background in marketing and communications. Jayme obtained a BS in Advertising from the University of Illinois and an MA in Nonprofit Administration from Lindenwood University.
