DESCRIPTION:About the Session\n\n\nJust like surgeons need to know the shape of the skeleton\, the physical layout of the internal organs\, and the connective tissues of the muscles and ligaments in order to perform a delicate surgery\, fundraisers need to know the essentials of a good letter in order to effectively reach their audience and encourage maximum giving. From what to include (a PS\, of course!) and what to exclude (condescension and jargon\, obviously)\, to how it all looks\, a good letter takes skill as well as an understanding of current best practices.\nIn this interactive session\, a fundraising consultant (Amie) and a copywriter (Stephan) will show you the essential elements of a good fundraising letter. Live examples from local and national organizations will be used to highlight the good\, the bad\, and (occasionally) the ugly.\nAttendees will leave with specific tools and resource recommendations\, including a checklist to help them better plan and deliver their next control-beating letter. \nAbout the Presenters\nAmie Bossi\, MPPA\, CFRE is an independent fundraising consultant who has worked with numerous local nonprofits in various roles to improve their operations and expand their revenue. Fundraising 101 will be facilitated by two advanced professionals with a combined 40 years of experience in the field. \nMEET THE PRESENTERS:\nJim Schallom\, MPPA\, CFRE\nDirector of Resource Development\nSherwood Forest\nJim Schallom\, MPPA\, CFRE\, is Director of Resource Development for Sherwood Forest where he is responsible for major gifts\, annual giving\, corporate and foundation relations\, community relations\, volunteer engagement\, planned giving\, and board development. He provides staff leadership to the organization’s first-ever capital and endowment campaign – Way More Than Camp. Prior roles have included Director of Development for Missouri and Indiana at College Summit and Membership Director for the Saint Louis Science Center.\nJim has served on the AFP St. Louis Board of Directors for six years and is currently Chapter President. He also co-leads the Alumni Affinity Group for the NPML Program at UMSL. He holds a BA in Education and Certificate in Business Administration from Saint Louis University and a Masters of Public Policy Administration and Graduate Certificate in Nonprofit Management and Leadership from the University of Missouri-St. Louis. Jim earned designation as a Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE) in 2014 and was recognized by AFP St. Louis as Outstanding Young Professional at National Philanthropy Day in 2015.\nTheresa Fleck\, CFRE\nSenior Consultant\nLet’s Build Hope\, LLC\nTheresa L. Fleck\, CFRE\, has been raising funds successfully since 2001. Previously\, she worked with Kingdom House\, where she achieved volunteer engagement goals such as a 78% increase in volunteer groups over 2 years. She passionately believes in engaging volunteers for the improvement of nonprofit organizations and the communities they serve.\nJulie currently volunteers as the VP of Programming for the Metropolitan Volunteer Management Association (MVMA)\, and previously served two consecutive terms on the Certification Committee for the United Way of Greater St. Louis’ Volunteer Center. DESCRIPTION:Workshop’s Content: This workshop will build and practice skills in articulating and changing your nonprofit’s organizational culture.  It is geared toward all organizational levels and applies to multiple areas of interest including building leadership capacity\, working through changing funding streams\, leading change and navigating human resource challenges.\nKey Learning Objectives: By the end of the two hour session\, participants will be able to: \n\nIdentify what’s working… and what isn’t… in your organization’s culture.\nImplement top-grading with your workforce\nClarify and communicate an organizational vision\nCreate an accountable culture of learning\nFind more ways to celebrate!\n\nPresentation/Workshop Format: The workshop will be approximately a 50/50 split between learning the basic tenets of nonprofit culture change and practicing them through case analysis and real-time problem solving.\nPresentation experience: I have presented at dozens of local\, state and national venues over the past two decades on topics such as accountability and metrics\, advocacy\, customer service\, stress and burnout\, strategy and situational leadership. I presented last year at the MCCA conference on customer service and believe I received very positive evaluations.\nAbout the Presenter:  Kevin Drollinger\nBrief Bio: Kevin Drollinger is the President and Executive Director of Provident\, St. Louis centric behavioral health organization with service elements throughout the country. Over the past four decades Kevin has provided leadership to nonprofits in Wisconsin\, Ohio and Missouri. In several cases\, Kevin inherited organizations that were characterized by high turnover\, staff entitlement\, infighting\, lack of accountability and poor financial performance. Under his leadership these organizations have made significant strides in morale\, productivity\, retention\, financial performance\, clarity of vision and mission impact. They have also achieved the Best Places to Work Award (twice)\, Better Business Bureau Torch Award\, Bank of America Neighborhood Builder Award\, and the What’s Right with the Region Award.\nKevin has bachelor’s degrees in Psychology and Social Work and a MSSW and MBA from the University of Wisconsin. He created and taught a course at Webster University in Governance and Executive Leadership in nonprofits. He is married to Diane and has four children and three grandchildren.

She passionately believes in engaging volunteers for the improvement of nonprofit organizations and the communities they serve.\nJulie currently volunteers as the VP of Programming for the Metropolitan Volunteer Management Association (MVMA)\, and previously served two consecutive terms on the Certification Committee for the United Way of Greater St. Louis’ Volunteer Center. Plunkett Esq.\nAnn has over thirty years of legal and human resources experience as corporate counsel\, employment counsel and human resource executive in various corporate settings.\nAfter two years in private law practice\, she served as Assistant Counsel for T.G. & Y. Stores Company\, a national discount retailer based in Oklahoma City\, OK.  In 1985 Ann relocated to St. Louis to join The May Department Stores Company.  As Senior Counsel at May Company\,  she specialized in employment law\, handling a broad scope of legal and human resources matters for May’s numerous divisions through the country.  Ann also gained hands-on human resource management experience at May\, directing the store human resource function in an operating division.\nAt Fox Photo\, Inc.\, a photo/imaging subsidiary of Eastmen Kodak\, Ann combined her legal background with her human resource expertise\, serving as General Counsel and Vice President of Human Resources.  In addition to managing all legal business issues internally for 435 stores in 26 states\, she directed the human resource functions including compensation\, benefits\, HR information systems\, employee relations and federal and state compliance.\nIn 1998\, Ann founded the full-service human resource consulting firm\, WorkPlace Partners\, Inc.\, which serves a myriad of companies in the St. Louis area and around the country.  Clients include a number of industries and all sizes of businesses\, from start up companies to large well-established enterprises and non-profit organizations.  Ann serves as an expert witness in employment litigation around the country and is a frequent guest speaker on various employment related topics.
