SUMMARY:Making Your Evaluation and Research Findings Sticky with Kylie Hutchinson
DESCRIPTION:People need data more than ever nowadays. But with so much going on\, they have even less bandwidth to absorb what we give them. The solution? Sticky messaging!\nThe evaluation profession (and others) have wholeheartedly embraced smaller and more innovative forms of reporting over the years such as infographics\, two-page reports\, slidedocs\, and story maps. However\, these briefer forms of communication require us to condense our extensive findings into much shorter content. Evaluators and other professionals also need to identify and make their key messages “sticky” in order to reduce the noise and ensure that busy decision-makers are able to understand\, recall\, and act on our key findings when the time comes.\nJoin us for a fun and interactive webinar looking at what makes a message “sticky” and leave feeling inspired to try something new!\nLearning Outcomes:\nAt the end of the session\, participants will be able to: \n\nexplain the benefits of stickier messaging with evaluation and research reports\ndescribe the steps to isolate your key messages from pages of findings\nlist ways to make these key messages stickier for stakeholders.\n\nPresenter:\nKylie Hutchinson is an external evaluator and principal with Community Solutions Planning & Evaluation. She is the author of three books on planning and evaluation: Survive and Thrive: Three Steps to Securing Your Program’s Sustainability\, A Short Primer on Innovative Evaluation Reporting\, and Evaluation Failures: 22 Tales of Mistakes Made and Lessons Learned. Her passion is developing practical resources for evaluators working in the trenches. In 2020\, she received the Canadian Evaluation Society’s Contribution to Evaluation in Canada award.

SUMMARY:The Intersection of Evaluation and Quality Improvement
DESCRIPTION:Description:\nEvaluation and Quality Improvement are both applications of evaluative thinking – asking questions\, answering them with data\, and using the findings to learn and improve. Unsurprisingly\, the two approaches call upon similar motives and skills. However\, each has its own set of unique\, value-adding tools and processes that can enhance the practice of the other. In this webinar\, we will compare and contrast the two disciplines and discuss how evaluators can apply their unique skills and perspectives to strengthen CQI practice while also using CQI concepts to enhance evaluations.\nPresenter:\nSarah J. Buek\, MSW\, LCSW\, is the Founder and Principal of The IllumiLab\, LLC. Ms. Buek has 15 years’ experience in the nonprofit human services sector in St. Louis. She began her career as a family therapist serving at-risk youth and families in home-based services before moving into program management and quality improvement. In her roles within nonprofit organizations\, she has been responsible for program design\, evaluation\, and improvement. She’s also designed and implemented performance management databases and systems. As a consultant and funder\, she’s trained\, coached\, and supported dozens of organizations in their efforts to design and implement effective programs\, robust performance management systems\, data collection tools and software\, quality improvement tools and processes\, and cultures of learning and improvement. Further\, Ms. Buek is Adjunct Faculty at the Brown School at Washington University\, where she teaches project management\, continuous quality improvement\, and program evaluation in the MSW/MPH and professional development programs.

SUMMARY:Planning for Success in a Post-Pandemic World
DESCRIPTION:Businesses are reopening\, people are traveling\, and life appears to be on a path to normal…Where do nonprofits fall on the Covid continuum?\nWe’ll check in with a panel of nonprofit experts for a pandemic update and learn how their respective worlds have evolved since Covid-19 upended life as we know it. From budget shortfalls\, furloughs\, and layoffs to cancelled galas and fundraisers – how did they survive the early days of the pandemic\, how did they adapt to the ongoing restrictions\, and what are they doing now to re-engage donors and volunteers?\nWhile there were some wildly creative responses and unique re-imaginings of nonprofit events and fundraising during the pandemic\, some nonprofits did not survive. Others face long term scars from lost revenue and donor awareness. Did the pandemic force some underlying issues to intensify and did it become an opportunity for change? Were any changes made in response to the pandemic that will remain in place?\nSusan Bushnell will share how a national nonprofit reacted to Covid. Jamie Case will discuss the challenges faced by a smaller\, local nonprofit. Paul Pagano will represent a local fine arts organization and share their experiences. \nPanelists\nKatie McGovern\nPresident/CEO\nThe ALS Association St. Louis Regional Chapter\nKatie provides leadership for the Chapter and is responsible for the administration and operations of the Chapter’s programs and services\, and for creating a philanthropic culture within board and staff. She is responsible for the development of strategic plans; capacity building; evaluation of programs\, services and staff for attainment of outcomes and goals; marketing and cultivating the business; and ensuring financial growth and success for the Chapter.\nShe holds a master’s and bachelor’s degree in organizational communication from Saint Louis University and has extensive experience in non-profit business management\, marketing and communications\, volunteer management and fund development.\nKatie joined the St. Louis Regional Chapter in 2012 as Development Director. During her tenure\, Chapter revenue increased 92 percent\, including a 180 percent increase in corporate giving. She played a key role in these efforts\, cultivating strong relationships with the Chapter’s corporate supporters and individual donors\, overseeing foundation and grant portfolios\, and managing board giving efforts. McGovern has held positions on a variety of local and national boards and committees.\nShe is married with three children\, one who is deaf\, and is a well-known community advocate for people with disabilities. \nJamie Case\nProject Manager Maddie’s® Human Animal Support Services\nAmerican Pets Alive\nJamie Case is the former Executive Director of Gateway Pet Guardians (GPG). GPG’s work is concentrated in the community of East St. Louis\, Illinois\, where almost half of the residents live at\, or below\, the poverty line. Since becoming the Executive Director in 2010\, the organization has grown exponentially. Jamie led a strong team of volunteers and staff to create community change through boots-on-the-ground outreach efforts.\nThe East St. Louis area is a resource desert with more than 64\,000 residents. In 2012\, Jamie and her team began transferring animals from the euthanasia list at the county’s municipal shelter. Twenty-five percent of intake at the county facility came from the GPG service area due to lack of resources. To increase life saving efforts\, she pushed for the integration of Illinois organizations into the regional St. Louis Petlover Coalition\, bridging the gap between Illinois and Missouri welfare initiatives. Jamie currently serves as a member of the coalition’s leading Task Force. In 2014\, she worked with East St. Louis city officials to eliminate breed-specific verbiage and update outdated inhumane verbiage in the city ordinance. She also led the charge to put pressure on county officials to improve conditions and procedures at the municipal shelter. In 2016\, Jamie and other citizens pushed to pass the county’s 2021 no-kill resolution. And in 2018\, the St. Clair County Animal Welfare Coalition was formed to bring together all welfare groups working toward the 2021 goal. This was the first county-wide coalition in the state of Illinois.\nTo solve the problem of lack of essential services and resources\, GPG purchased a former elementary school in March 2019 which has been renovated into the St. Louis metro region’s largest pet resource center. This facility\, which includes the city’s first veterinary clinic\, opened in the summer of 2020 amid the pandemic that left many people needing low cost and subsidized services. \nPaul Pagano\nExecutive Director\nGateway Center for Performing Arts\nPaul Pagano (he/him) is a co-founder and Executive Director of Gateway Center for Performing Arts (GCPA) in Webster Groves. As an actor (Actors’ Equity Association)\, some of Paul’s credits include the Guthrie Theatre\, The Children’s Theatre Company\, Chanhassen Dinner Theatre\, Utah Shakespeare Festival\, The MUNY\, and STAGES St. Louis. As a fight director\, his credits include The MUNY\, Missouri All-State Theatre\, Mustard Seed Theatre\, Washington University Performing Arts Department\, and GCPA. In addition to directing more than 20 productions at GCPA\, Paul has also directed at Fontbonne University and St. Louis University High School. His students have gone on to study performing arts at NYU\, Boston Conservatory\, Indiana University\, Elon University\, Baldwin Wallace\, Marymount Manhattan College\, Roosevelt University Chicago\, AMDA\, University of Utah\, Columbia College Chicago\, University of Mississippi\, and Missouri State. \nModerator\nApril Foster\nDirector of Programs\nCenter for Women in Transition\nApril graduated from Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville in 1999 with a BS in social work and received her MSW with a focus on gender specific programming in the justice system in 2009.  April worked in juvenile justice for 10 years before moving into behavioral research.   She then spent 10 years as a research coordinator within Washington University’s Brown School of Social Work and the Department of Psychiatry with studies focusing on trauma and PTSD\, perinatal mood and anxiety disorders\, and bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.  Throughout her time in research\, she remained involved with reentry work through volunteer\, consultant\, and Board activities with local reentry organizations.  In 2019 she returned to her passion of working with justice involved populations on a full-time basis as the Director of Programs at the Center for Women in Transition.

SUMMARY:Fundamentals of Data Storytelling
DESCRIPTION:The Evaluation Association of St. Louis has partnered with the Michigan Association for Evaluation (MAE) to offer this virtual learning opportunity.\nCost: \nThe cost is free for EASL and MAE members\nThe cost for other affiliates and the public is $10\nDescription:\nToday\, data is everywhere. We often have access to massive amounts of data about participants\, service administration\, and program effectiveness. Communicating takeaway messages that are useful\, equitable\, and culturally responsive can be challenging. Traditionally\, data is communicated using dry reports\, stuck in boring tables and charts. We have the power and opportunity to transform data reporting into deliverables that engage our clients\, funders\, and community partners. Harnessing the power of our data by using effective storytelling and visualization techniques gives staff the potential to better communicate program outcomes. We will tackle how can we move from reporting like this to that?\nIn this presentation\, Jennifer will cover some of the research behind presenting data intentionally. Together\, we will review three fundamentals of data storytelling that will help attendees create effective visuals. Grounded in visual processing theory\, the principles discussed in this keynote will enhance attendees’ ability to communicate more effectively with colleagues and university stakeholders through a focus on the proper use of color\, arrangement\, graphics\, and text.\nPresenter:\nJennifer Nulty is a data designer and speaker. Jenny brings creative energy to making data intriguing and impactful while helping clients transform the way they communicate their story. Her work focuses on bringing research-based transformations to a range of deliverables including charts\, slides\, reports\, infographics\, and dashboards. Grounded in data visualization best practice\, she teaches methods of reducing clutter and ways to best emphasize the most important points. She is committed to revolutionizing the landscape of data reporting by working with companies\, government agencies\, and nonprofits using a capacity building training approach. She works to capture the audience’s attention with impactful visuals so they can make meaningful data-driven decisions. Jenny runs her own independent consulting business where she has worked with clients like Centers for Disease Control and Prevention\, Evergreen Data\, the American Civil Liberties Union\, and the University of Michigan.

SUMMARY:Storytelling: Your Most Powerful Tool in Nonprofit Marketing
DESCRIPTION:WHAT’S THE BIG IDEA?\nWe all want to be part of an epic story where we are the hero. We have wanted it since we were children reading bedtime stories with our parents or watching our first films on the Big Screen. We are the central figure in our life’s epic of breakups\, successes\, failures\, and adventure. However\, when your nonprofit markets itself\, it can’t be the hero. The people you serve and your donors must be the hero; the nonprofit is just the guide. Your organization is the Obi-wan\, and they are the Luke Skywalkers. In the presentation\, filmmaker Dan Parris breaks down the elements of a story and how your nonprofit can use this powerful tool to draw current donors deeper into the mission and attract new donors.\nUsing examples from organizations like Charity Water\, When the Saints and Almost Home\, Dan makes a compelling argument about how understanding story and who the hero is changes everything about our nonprofit marketing. You will dive into story structure and how that can be persuasively applied to blogs\, podcasts\, email blasts\, promotional videos and virtual fundraisers/events. We will talk about the importance of character\, conflict\, and calls to action when it comes to the work your organization does and talk about tips on how to communicate this well. The talk will be interactive\, and you will leave the presentation understanding how the 5 parts of a story apply to the organization you work with and the story you all are compelling donors to join.\nThis session has been approved for 1 CFRE point.\nDan Parris\nCo-Founder\nSpeak Up Studios\nDan Parris is an award-winning filmmaker and co-founder of Speak Up Studios\, a St. Louis based video production company specializing in non-profit storytelling. Their past clients include Parents as Teachers\, St. Louis Public Radio\, St. Louis Aquarium Foundation\, UMSL\, SLU\, The Salvation Army\, The Scholarship Foundation of St. Louis\, Missouri Baptist Healthcare Foundation\, Wings of Hope and Deaconess Foundation\, to name a few. Speak Up Studios has helped nonprofits raise millions through the use of video and storytelling and are passionate about the collective impact happening in our region. Dan also directed the feature-length documentaries Show Me Democracy and What Matters?\, was the closing speaker at TEDxGatewayArch and co-founded the non-profit\, Continuity\, whose mission is to expand diversity in media production. Dan lives in South City St. Louis with his wife and 4 kids.
