DESCRIPTION:Volunteer experiences foster opportunities for people of various backgrounds to interact with one another. But navigating the many currents of class\, race\, faith\, education and language can cause friction between volunteers\, those they serve\, and you – the volunteer manager who’s steering the ship! In this session we’ll discuss how to train our current volunteers to serve with cultural sensitivity\, how to broaden our recruiting efforts to include underrepresented groups\, and address common barriers that volunteers encounter in culture-crossing service. \nInstructor Hannah Shanks holds her Master’s in Social Work from St. Louis University. She works with churches\, non-profit organizations and universities on issues related to cultural competency\, social justice\, and organizational direction and building strategic partnerships. \nFee: $55. DESCRIPTION:Event Details:\n\n\n\nManaging Difficult Volunteer Behaviors and Situations\nDiscipline and volunteering do not sit well together; they feel uncomfortable in the same sentence .From time to time\, even the best volunteers can be difficult or a situation involving them becomes awkward.  Left unresolved\, the behavior and or the situation will lead to disruption throughout the volunteer ranks. Should the relationship with the volunteer be repaired? Can we FIRE the volunteer? Should we?\nThis workshop provides insights into how to identify the underlying issues and address them in a manner that protects the dignity of the volunteer and all parties concerned.  Step-by-step\, participants will explore opportunities to once again find a workable balance within their volunteer programs.\nAt the conclusion of this workshop\, participants will be able to:\n·         Identify underlying reasons for poor volunteer performance;\n·         Implement a progressive discipline system;\n·         Understand when and how to remove a volunteer.\nAbout the Presenter:\n\nReneé Johnson\nNonprofit Generalist\nReneé Johnson is a nonprofit generalist with particular expertise and professional experience in volunteer and arts management\, grants management and training. She consults with nonprofit organizations on a myriad of issues and teaches a course on basic volunteer management in the Nonprofit Management Program at Washington University.\nReneé served as the initial Executive Director of the Edwardsville Arts Center\, helping the organization establish its first facility. Previously\, she co-managed the Minority Arts Program (MAP) of the Missouri Arts Council (MAC).  With her counterpart in Kansas City\, Reneé helped minority developed arts programs throughout the state access the financial and technical assistance resources of the Council while providing guidance and coaching in the general growth and development of the nonprofit organizations. Prior to her work with MAC/MAP\, Reneé redeveloped and managed the volunteer and intern programs of the Missouri Historical Society; and\, served as the Director of External Communications for the Greater Minneapolis (MN) Girl Scout Council. Throughout her career\, Reneé has fed her passion for exchanging ideas and sharing knowledge as a local\, regional and national trainer. While completing her graduate work in Arts Management at American University\, Reneé worked with both local and national arts service organizations based in Washington\, D.C.  She also holds a BA in Russian and Chinese Comparative History from Oberlin College.\nAs a volunteer\, Reneé serves the volunteer management field as a member of the Editorial Review Board of the International Journal of Volunteer Management (IJOVA) and as a member and past president of the St. Louis Council (CVD) – Directors of Volunteer Services\, now the Metropolitan Volunteer Management Association.Her current community involvements include Oberlin College Alumni Recruiter and co-chair of the Child Welfare Allocations Panel of the Greater St. Louis United Way.
