SUMMARY:Planning for Success in a Post-Pandemic World
DESCRIPTION:Businesses are reopening\, people are traveling\, and life appears to be on a path to normal…Where do nonprofits fall on the Covid continuum?\nWe’ll check in with a panel of nonprofit experts for a pandemic update and learn how their respective worlds have evolved since Covid-19 upended life as we know it. From budget shortfalls\, furloughs\, and layoffs to cancelled galas and fundraisers – how did they survive the early days of the pandemic\, how did they adapt to the ongoing restrictions\, and what are they doing now to re-engage donors and volunteers?\nWhile there were some wildly creative responses and unique re-imaginings of nonprofit events and fundraising during the pandemic\, some nonprofits did not survive. Others face long term scars from lost revenue and donor awareness. Did the pandemic force some underlying issues to intensify and did it become an opportunity for change? Were any changes made in response to the pandemic that will remain in place?\nSusan Bushnell will share how a national nonprofit reacted to Covid. Jamie Case will discuss the challenges faced by a smaller\, local nonprofit. Paul Pagano will represent a local fine arts organization and share their experiences. \nPanelists\nKatie McGovern\nPresident/CEO\nThe ALS Association St. Louis Regional Chapter\nKatie provides leadership for the Chapter and is responsible for the administration and operations of the Chapter’s programs and services\, and for creating a philanthropic culture within board and staff. She is responsible for the development of strategic plans; capacity building; evaluation of programs\, services and staff for attainment of outcomes and goals; marketing and cultivating the business; and ensuring financial growth and success for the Chapter.\nShe holds a master’s and bachelor’s degree in organizational communication from Saint Louis University and has extensive experience in non-profit business management\, marketing and communications\, volunteer management and fund development.\nKatie joined the St. Louis Regional Chapter in 2012 as Development Director. During her tenure\, Chapter revenue increased 92 percent\, including a 180 percent increase in corporate giving. She played a key role in these efforts\, cultivating strong relationships with the Chapter’s corporate supporters and individual donors\, overseeing foundation and grant portfolios\, and managing board giving efforts. McGovern has held positions on a variety of local and national boards and committees.\nShe is married with three children\, one who is deaf\, and is a well-known community advocate for people with disabilities. \nJamie Case\nProject Manager Maddie’s® Human Animal Support Services\nAmerican Pets Alive\nJamie Case is the former Executive Director of Gateway Pet Guardians (GPG). GPG’s work is concentrated in the community of East St. Louis\, Illinois\, where almost half of the residents live at\, or below\, the poverty line. Since becoming the Executive Director in 2010\, the organization has grown exponentially. Jamie led a strong team of volunteers and staff to create community change through boots-on-the-ground outreach efforts.\nThe East St. Louis area is a resource desert with more than 64\,000 residents. In 2012\, Jamie and her team began transferring animals from the euthanasia list at the county’s municipal shelter. Twenty-five percent of intake at the county facility came from the GPG service area due to lack of resources. To increase life saving efforts\, she pushed for the integration of Illinois organizations into the regional St. Louis Petlover Coalition\, bridging the gap between Illinois and Missouri welfare initiatives. Jamie currently serves as a member of the coalition’s leading Task Force. In 2014\, she worked with East St. Louis city officials to eliminate breed-specific verbiage and update outdated inhumane verbiage in the city ordinance. She also led the charge to put pressure on county officials to improve conditions and procedures at the municipal shelter. In 2016\, Jamie and other citizens pushed to pass the county’s 2021 no-kill resolution. And in 2018\, the St. Clair County Animal Welfare Coalition was formed to bring together all welfare groups working toward the 2021 goal. This was the first county-wide coalition in the state of Illinois.\nTo solve the problem of lack of essential services and resources\, GPG purchased a former elementary school in March 2019 which has been renovated into the St. Louis metro region’s largest pet resource center. This facility\, which includes the city’s first veterinary clinic\, opened in the summer of 2020 amid the pandemic that left many people needing low cost and subsidized services. \nPaul Pagano\nExecutive Director\nGateway Center for Performing Arts\nPaul Pagano (he/him) is a co-founder and Executive Director of Gateway Center for Performing Arts (GCPA) in Webster Groves. As an actor (Actors’ Equity Association)\, some of Paul’s credits include the Guthrie Theatre\, The Children’s Theatre Company\, Chanhassen Dinner Theatre\, Utah Shakespeare Festival\, The MUNY\, and STAGES St. Louis. As a fight director\, his credits include The MUNY\, Missouri All-State Theatre\, Mustard Seed Theatre\, Washington University Performing Arts Department\, and GCPA. In addition to directing more than 20 productions at GCPA\, Paul has also directed at Fontbonne University and St. Louis University High School. His students have gone on to study performing arts at NYU\, Boston Conservatory\, Indiana University\, Elon University\, Baldwin Wallace\, Marymount Manhattan College\, Roosevelt University Chicago\, AMDA\, University of Utah\, Columbia College Chicago\, University of Mississippi\, and Missouri State. \nModerator\nApril Foster\nDirector of Programs\nCenter for Women in Transition\nApril graduated from Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville in 1999 with a BS in social work and received her MSW with a focus on gender specific programming in the justice system in 2009.  April worked in juvenile justice for 10 years before moving into behavioral research.   She then spent 10 years as a research coordinator within Washington University’s Brown School of Social Work and the Department of Psychiatry with studies focusing on trauma and PTSD\, perinatal mood and anxiety disorders\, and bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.  Throughout her time in research\, she remained involved with reentry work through volunteer\, consultant\, and Board activities with local reentry organizations.  In 2019 she returned to her passion of working with justice involved populations on a full-time basis as the Director of Programs at the Center for Women in Transition.

SUMMARY:Census Data: Highlights in the St. Louis Area
DESCRIPTION:The 2020 Census counted every person living in the United States and the five U.S. territories. The 2020 Census marked the 24th time that the country has counted its population; the first was in 1790. In addition to the Decennial\, conducted every 10 years\, the Census Bureau conducts surveys year-round. Currently they are conducting a survey on the impact of the pandemic\, called the Pulse Survey.\nThe census provides critical data that lawmakers\, business owners\, teachers\, and many others use to provide daily services\, products\, and support for you and your community. Every year\, billions of dollars in federal funding go to hospitals\, fire departments\, schools\, roads\, and other services based on census data.\nThis session will take a look at the major demographic changes for the St. Louis region as well as provide an overview of the types of data that grant writers are able to pull from the government website. \nMeet the Presenter \nToni Pitchford is a native of Chicago\, Illinois. Her experience functioning in various capacities include entrepreneurship\, corporate\, city and state governmental sectors. She began her career with the Census Bureau in 1996 as an information specialist. She has since served in numerous positions with the Census Bureau\, including: \n\nDecennial Government Partnership Specialist\nDecennial Area Manager\nSpecial Census Supervisor\nSpecial Project Manager\nPartnership Coordinator for a three State region during the 2000 and 2010 Decennial Census\n\nShe currently serves as Data Dissemination Specialist for Arkansas\, Iowa and Missouri.\nAs the Data Dissemination Specialist\, she helps individuals\, businesses\, organizations\, elected officials\, and educational entities navigate the Census website to assist with planning\, research\, and grant writing. Toni is committed to timely dissemination and access of governmental data and succinctly articulates the importance of the data to communities. She assists the youth of tomorrow by helping them navigate through this data with simple and understandable instructions.

SUMMARY:Building a Workplace Culture of Impact and Enjoyment: How to Balance Our Work and Engage the Team
DESCRIPTION:Having a culture of both impact and enjoyment is no easy task. We know we have to start by setting goals and recognizing achievements. From there though\, we can’t have an enjoyable workplace simply by using the word “fun.” Fun committees and fun days are just a small part of building the right culture. We have to have meetings employees look forward to\, and be willing to cut loose or\, more importantly\, let employees cut loose in their own way and look for ways to get out of the office – together. But then we must balance this against productivity and achievable outcomes. Learn how to begin fostering this kind of organizational culture in this 2 hour session.\nInstructor Chris Martinez has worked for the past 12 years in the non-profit sector\, first as a national program director for the award winning Mission Continues and later in fund development for multiple agencies. He was responsible for both startups and large established organizations with budgets over $100 MM. As a fundraiser\, program expert and consultant\, Chris has led dozens of strategic planning sessions\, has served as an Executive Director and national trainer for large healthcare nonprofits\, and has spoken at multiple academic institutions\, including Georgetown University. Chris has served on multiple nonprofit boards and currently provides pro-bono services to the Ready by 21 initiative and United Way\, as a member of the Performance Improvement team.

SUMMARY:How Do We Know We Are Doing Good Work?
DESCRIPTION:You go to work each day hoping that what you do is making a difference. But how do you know the hard work you and the staff of your nonprofit organization are doing is having a positive impact and achieving your mission? This class is oriented toward program staff and leadership as they seek to implement and manage successful programs. It will provide an overview of approaches to assess program impact including logic models\, and questions to think about when considering whether programs are effective. Class activities will include small group and hands-on exercises.\nInstructor Jama Dodson has spent much of her career in non-profit program and executive management roles with a particular interest in services for children and youth.  She came to St. Louis from Rochester\, NY in 2000 to establish an organization focused on strengthening the region’s youth services sector\, known as St. Louis for Kids—now a part of United 4 Children.  Much of that work involved developing and promulgating systems of quality standards\, professional development and capacity-building for youth serving organizations. After nine years\, Jama moved on to become Executive Director of the Family Support Network\, a non-profit organization providing in-home services to families at risk of child abuse/neglect\, where she served for three years.\nIn January 2012\, Jama was appointed Executive Director of the Saint Louis Mental Health Board (MHB).  MHB is an independent taxing authority distributing tax funds to non-profits that provide direct services addressing substance use disorders\, mental health conditions and children’s services for City residents.  MHB makes funding decisions and agreements based on each agency’s proposed successful outcomes—a method of grantmaking that is intended to reward performance in addition to activities.\nJama holds a Masters in Public Administration from State University of New York\, College at Brockport and a BS in Education from Missouri State University.\nInstructor Elizabeth George is the Director of Philanthropic Advising at the St. Louis Community Foundation.  She has over 21 years of strategic planning\, organizational development\, facilitation\, and program assessment experience with non-profit organizations.  Elizabeth currently works with donors to help strategize their giving while also overseeing the grant administration for family and private foundations – including grantmaking due diligence\, monitoring and evaluation\, and reporting.\nImmediately prior to this\, Elizabeth was the Managing Director at The Rome Group\, where she led planning projects for organizations ranging from the Daughters of Charity Foundation of St. Louis to Queen of Peace Center and Diversity Awareness Partnership.  She assisted Jewish Family & Children’s Services with the structuring of a four-year business plan\, including recommendations regarding increasing marketing\, and Casa de Salud with development assessment and recommendations.\nPrior to The Rome Group\, Elizabeth spent 10 years as a Vice President with Deaconess Foundation\, directing the Impact Partnership\, Deaconess’ multi-year capacity building initiative.  In this role\, Elizabeth oversaw both the evaluation of the Impact Partnership and trained several Impact Partners on developing programmatic logic models.  Elizabeth has taught Developing Programs for Children and Youth at Washington University’s Brown School of Social Work and presented workshops on performance management for University of Missouri – St. Louis and Nonprofit Services Center.  Elizabeth earned an MSW from Washington University and an MBA from Harvard University.\nInstructor Melinda McAliney brings deep expertise across corporate\, individual\, and foundation philanthropy to the Vario team. Her skill is fueled by a lifelong passion to make a difference and to equip others to do the same.\nOver the years\, Melinda has worked with foundations and corporations to develop holistic giving strategies that lead to changed communities and lives. She’s consulted with countless nonprofits to help them identify and measure their impact\, and then share their story with donors. She has also helped empower individuals to serve their communities in new\, more fulfilling ways. Her previous roles in philanthropy for the St. Louis Blues NHL hockey team\, United Way\, EDS\, Send Me St. Louis\, and Lutheran Foundation of St. Louis have given her a strong base for equipping foundations and philanthropists to increase both the joy and impact of their giving. She has seen time and time again that when you intentionally apply your whole self – your time and your finances – amazing things will happen. One of her greatest joys currently is helping her children identify their passions so they can be the next generation of change-makers.
