Do you want a methodology that takes approximately $.03-$.10 to raise a dollar? If you are just starting a planned giving program\, you’ll learn how to get the troops trained and ready to go. If you have an established program and want to grow it\, you will learn how to grow it exponentially. 65% of all Americans don’t have an estate plan or will. Don’t let your supporters be part of the 35%.\nCarol Weisman founded Board Builders in 1994. She does keynotes\, board retreats and teaches board members around the world how to fundraise. Carol has served on 39 boards and has been president of eight. She is finishing her 10th and 11th books\, which focus on planned giving. Becoming One of the Grateful Dead: Where There’s a Will There’s a Way is for donors. It features people from all walks of life who are making a difference in this world and the next. Her other book is for nonprofit leaders. Planned Giving Basics: The Why the Who and the How shares down-to-earth advice on the specifics of how to ask\, who to ask first\, and the words to use. Raising Charitable Children has been featured in the NY Times\, Parade Magazine\, Scholastic Parent and Child Magazine\, and though she wrote it in 2006\, was in Money Magazine last year. Few things get Carol more excited than teaching board members that everyone in the room can be happily and productively involved in the fundraising process. Carol has two major goals in life: do a cartwheel again by age 70 and return to her pre-baby weight before her son’s fast approaching 40th birthday. \n\nClick for more information about our speakers.\nTO REGISTER FOR THIS EVENT PLEASE VISIT:\nThe St. Louis Planned Giving Council Calendar of Events

SUMMARY:Association of Fundraising Professionals: Extended Session with Tom Ahern
DESCRIPTION:Tom Ahern speaks internationally on how to make more money from donor communications. He’s written five how-to books on that particular topic. His clients for direct mail\, case statements\, audits and training include major charities like Sharp Healthcare (San Diego)\, the Gettysburg Foundation\, the University of Chicago\, Save the Children\, Oxfam Australia as well as many smaller and local nonprofits.\nEvent Details\n7:30 – 8:15 am: Senior Professionals – Meet the Author\n8:00 am – Registration & Breakfast\n8:30 – 11:30 am Two Presentations: “Writing a Powerful Case for Support“and “Direct Mail for Smaller NGOs”\n12:00 – 1:30 pm – Lunch and “Loverizing”: The Lucrative\Difference a Few Well-Chosen Words Will Make in Your Donor Communications\nCost: $85 for AFP members\, $130 for non-members (includes parking\, breakfast and boxed lunch)\nSenior Professionals Breakfast (limited to 25 people)\nNetwork with your colleagues and engage in an informal Q&A with speaker\, Tom Ahern\, prior to the Seminar.  Also\, share your feedback on the types of programming that you would like AFP to offer Senior Professionals. This breakfast is only for Senior Professionals (10+ years in the profession). Open only to those who register for the May 25th Session with Tom Ahern.\nWriting a Powerful Case for Support: “Why should I give you my hard-earned money?”  Answer this question well\, and you’ll never be short of funds. Answer it poorly\, and fundraising becomes an uphill battle.  Most nonprofits suffer from what the best-selling business book\, Made to Stick\, rightly calls the “curse of knowledge.”  This shortcoming – and a common lack of donor-centricity – seriously undermine the effectiveness of many (maybe even most) donor communications … from the humble elevator speech (an overrated exercise) to direct mail appeals to websites to stewardship materials like “gratitude reports” all the way up to capital campaign case statements.  In this revealing session\, one of North America’s most experienced case writers shares his secrets for properly selling your projects\, programs\, endowments\, initiatives\, buildings\, renovations\, and bright ideas.\nDirect Mail for Smaller NGOs: How to Make It Work for You\nIs direct mail dead? Cancel the obituary. It is still\, by far\, the biggest moneymaker in fundraising.  On the other hand: given that many of the so-called “rules” of direct mail derive from campaigns that mail millions of pieces\, can smaller\, local non-profits\, mailing mere hundreds or thousands of pieces\, reasonably expect to use direct mail to advantage?  Absolutely.  Direct-mail appeals from local non-profits\, done right\, can net tens of thousands of dollars with a single mailing. For smaller NGOs\, direct mail remains a powerful tool for (1) acquiring new donors and (2) attracting repeat gifts from past donors. Direct mail also plays a key role in promoting bequest and monthly giving.  Yet local charities often find their direct mail results deeply disappointing.  What are they doing wrong?  This workshop will analyze several recent case studies where small or local non-profits used direct mail to attract shockingly large amounts of philanthropy. This workshop clarifies how direct mail really works (physically and emotionally); how to set achievable expectations; and how to write an appeal that engages the reader.\nLoverizing: The Lucrative Difference a Few Well-Chosen Words Will Make in Your Donor Communications\nYou’ve heard the news: donor-centricity — an approach psychologist Jen Shang has dubbed “loverizing” — is a street paved with gold. It raises lots more money and retains donors longer.  But you’re in the trenches. You need practical advice. What — exactly — makes a direct mail appeal irresistibly “donor-centered”? How do you “loverize” your website or newsletter?  Learn the nuts and bolts in this heavily illustrated new workshop from copywriting master\, Tom Ahern.  Angel Aloma\, ED of Food for the Poor\, a billion dollar charity\, recently wrote Tom to say: “I want to reiterate that much of what we are doing now in regards to donor centricity was inspired by your wonderful presentation…. I am convinced that the reason why we have grown in the last years of tough economic conditions in the country is because of that wonderful switch that you inspired [in our communications].”

SUMMARY:Association of Fundraising Professionals May Seminar: Leading Through Change
DESCRIPTION:We’ve heard these before: Change is scary. Change is difficult. Change is uncomfortable. The reality is that change is probably the only thing that is guaranteed in this world. If we avoid change\, we avoid potential for growth and opportunity. Remaining stagnant or developing “sameness” in today’s competitive market is not an option for fundraisers or organizations as a whole. Part of initiating change or conversely\, adapting to it\, is knowing what is happening now and how making the changes will impact progress and future successes.\nWhether you’re the sole development person in your agency or part of a large fundraising machine\, change is going to affect you throughout your career. “Leading Through Change: Adapting to New Regulations and Progressing Organizational Culture” will help prepare you for potential changes through the use of real-life examples of organizational and departmental change during “good” times and during some significant hardships\, like the lack of an Illinois state budget. The seminar will also address the historical component of an organization\, where many Board members and members of the leadership team have significant tenure\, and the challenges that arise when trying to make significant changes that impact those individuals directly. How messages are communicated and the way all stakeholders in an organization are involved can directly impact how change is perceived and the effectiveness of what the future will hold once those changes are implemented successfully.\n“The secret of change is to focus all of you energy\, not on fighting the old\, but on building the new.” Dan Millman\, Way of the Peaceful Warrior: A Book That Changes Lives\n \nMeet the Presenters:\nMelissa Webster is a Director of Programs for Placement for One Hope United. She also holds responsibilities in Fund Development and is a firm believer in fundraising being part of everyone’s role within an agency. In the first year of being an official part of the development team\, she helped increase fundraising for the Central and Southern Illinois region of One Hope United by over 60%. She brings to One Hope United experience building successful teams and a background in not only communications and fundraising\, but mental health and counseling. Melissa is a licensed therapist (LCPC) and has worked in the field for over 17 years. Melissa is a graduate of Indiana State University\, with a BS in Communications and an MS in Agency Counseling.\nJayme Godoyo is a Fund Development Officer for One Hope United\, covering the Central and Southern Illinois region. In her five years with the agency\, Jayme has been involved in numerous changes\, the most recent being the realignment of the team into one entity\, thus dissolving the regional lines. Since that transition began in early 2015\, development income has more than doubled agency-wide. Jayme brings experience in direct service work with residential youth to the team as well as a background in marketing and communications. Jayme obtained a BS in Advertising from the University of Illinois and an MA in Nonprofit Administration from Lindenwood University.
