DESCRIPTION:Participate in this web-based class for an updated primer on how to start a Missouri nonprofit corporation that will seek to obtain 501(c)(3) tax exempt status from the IRS. This class will also cover the basics of good governance policies\, strategies\, and requirements that will allow your organization to maintain its 501(c)(3) tax exempt status on an ongoing basis once you are up and running.\nNote that this class is meant to provide a basic introduction\, and broad overview\, on how to start a Missouri nonprofit corporation that goes on to apply for 501(c)(3) tax exempt status. Further\, to be clear\, this class will focus on applicable Missouri law\, requirements\, and standards that come into play in the process (vs. state laws and processes that might be different in other states).\n\n\nInstructor Dan Sise\, JD\, has served on the board of directors of a number of nonprofit organizations in the St. Louis area\, including both foundations/funders\, and direct service providers.  Prior to joining the faculty of the NPML program\, Dan worked at Habitat for Humanity St. Louis where he was director of operations. DESCRIPTION:Any nonprofit professionals and interested volunteers are invited to this overview of the latest free resources and services for fundraisers available at St. Louis Public’s Central Library including:\n1)    recent Foundation Center and other subscription database upgrades providing information about grantmakers and/or potential individual donors\,\n2)    recommendations of  free research websites and online learning opportunities to help you keep up with trending mission\, finance and/or leadership issues affecting your requests for funds\, And\n3)    meet contact links with local professional groups working to improve  the sector\, including the Greater St. Louis Community Foundation\, NSC\, AFP\, CSPRC\, GPA\, NPML & YNPN.\nCoffee\, tea and light refreshments will be provided. SUMMARY:IRS Conference for Small and Medium-Sized 501 (c)(3) Organizations
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, May 12\, 2015 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Summit Lounge in the J.C. Penney Conference Center on the UMSL campus\n\nAs every 501(c)(3) organization knows\, IRS rules and regulations are stringent and require compliance on an ongoing basis if a nonprofit organization intends to maintain its 501 (c)(3) tax-exempt status. Attend this special\, low-cost workshop to hear directly from the IRS about the benefits and responsibilities of tax exemption under 501 (c)(3)\, and actions that may jeopardize the exempt status of an organization.\nTopics will include: \n\nThe definition of unrelated business income\, including common examples and exceptions\, filing requirements and charitable gaming.\nClassification of workers and filing requirements for employees and independent contractors.\nAn overview of the Forms 990\, 990-EZ\, and 990-N (e-Postcard)\, including tips on recordkeeping and answers to frequently asked questions. Includes a presentation of resources and tools available to exempt organizations to help them file accurate\, error-free returns.\nAn overview of disclosures tax-exempt organizations are required to make.\n\nIn addition\, during the lunch hour\, the Missouri Attorney General’s Office will present an overview of state law regarding nonprofit\, tax-exempt organizations.\nThis class has been approved for 6.2 hours of continuing legal education (CLE) credit by The Missouri Bar. SUMMARY:Accounting for Non-Accountants: Understanding Basic Financial Information in a Nonprofit Organization
DESCRIPTION:Every organization has board or staff members that possess financial credentials and/or experience and are charged with the primary responsibility of reporting or managing the financial matters of the nonprofit. However\, board and staff members whose expertise is other than financial still need the ability to monitor the financial condition of the organization and be in a position to ask questions and determine if the organization has the resources to carry out its program goals and strategies. This is an introductory course in how to read Financial Statements for those who are not finance or accounting professionals.\nAttendees will learn:\n• What to look for when reading financial statements\n• Indicators of financial health as well as how to detect potential trouble spots\n• What is different about nonprofit financial statements\n• How to confidently ask questions of your accounting or finance professionals\nInstructor Kim Abel became Deputy Director of The Scholarship Foundation in February 2011 after joining the staff in 2001 as Associate Director. Prior to 13 years in nonprofit financial and business management\, Kim held a variety of management roles in small and large for-profit companies. She was Chief Financial Officer at Propper International and prior to that\, at Frank Spielberg Sales. She also worked for 18 years for Edison Brothers Stores\, rising to the position of Director of Accounting Information and Control/Manager of Internal Financial Reporting (Assistant Vice President).
